Nothing says summer better than a nice crisp, cool melon. Growing solely on vines, melons originate from the same family as squash and cucumber, the Cucurbitaceae family. After a long hot day, melons can keep you hydrated and your body in balance since they are great sources of water, potassium, vitamin C and vitamin A. Melons do not ripen once they have been picked from the vine since they do not contain starch reserves to convert to sugar, so be sure to purchase melons that are ready to eat!

A summer favorite of many, melons prove their refreshing nature when served with chopped fresh mint. Most melons lose their flavors when served ice cold, watermelon being the exception. Having guests over to grill? Use a melon baller to scoop out servings of 2 or 3 varieties of melons, and serve them on the side on a wooden skewer. These can be served as is, or dressed in a light vinaigrette. Too much work? Simply scoop out the seeds of a half a melon, and use as a bowl to serve yogurt, or cottage cheese.
